Intentional Self-Care to Feel Better

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

The purpose of self-care is to take action to preserve or improve one's own health. Self-care allows you to take an active role in protecting your well-being and happiness, especially during times of stress. However, it’s not just about bubble baths or shopping that contribute to our overall wellness. It’s the intentions behind our acts of self-care that positively contribute to our well-being.

If we know where our stress is coming from then we can intentionally target our self-care to help us feel better. So how do we assess our stress? We look at all our areas of wellness.

Areas of Wellness:

Physical

Occupational

Social

Intellectual

Emotional

Spiritual

Then, we intentionally engage in self-care acts that target our stress. A bubble bath might help with our physical wellness for personal hygiene, but making plans to catch up with a close friend might be more beneficial if the bulk of our stress is coming from our social wellness due to feeling lonely or isolated.

When we are first aware of where our stress is stemming from, then we can better help ourselves to feel better. After assessing our levels of stress from each area that makes up our well-being, we can then intentionally choose an act of self-care to target that stress. This way, by being intentional with our acts of self-care we can begin to better combat stress. By doing this we allow ourselves to take an active role in filling up our cup so that we can better show up for ourselves, our job, and the ones we love.
